Reality Check (Mom - just don't read this!)

So hopefully it never is a reality... but today I went to my spouse's orientation here at Osan. By far the most interesting part to most of us was the issuing of the gas masks. That is, what we are to put on in case the people to the north ever decide they are going to spew nasty chemicals down here. Luckily, no one has ever had to don one of these lovely accessories here, except for pretend, but I must admit that just the sight of it is a little unnerving. And the demonstration of how to put it on the babies and kids (they have different ones than the adults that encompass them a little more) had everyone in the room pretty quiet - until it was question time! Then there were lots of questions about the whole deal. When you show a group of moms how to put gas masks on their children, there are lots of questions.
The bottom line (or the "take away", a term many of the speakers used today) is that we will probably never need a gas mask, but it is definitely important to be prepared and know what we need to do in case of an emergency. The military here goes to great lengths to make sure that we will be quickly evacuated if necessary.
So I expect to enjoy many more nights like this one... walking to Chili's with the family, and watching a movie with Dan after the kids are in bed. Or days like yesterday... getting together with a friend and walking around the local area, getting stopped by many a nice Korean lady wanting to oogle at our kids, especially the baby! They love the babies.
That is my reality.
I'll just forget, for now, that we have gas masks in the closet!
